Coconut oil helps you lose weight. But how?

Usually, consuming oil is associated with gaining weight. So how is it that coconut oil helps with weight loss? It’s true—not a joke. Let’s understand how.
Anomaly
Coconut oil is an anomaly among edible oils and truly a gift of nature to humanity. In science, a famous anomaly is that of water: ice floats in water. Normally, cooling a liquid should bring its molecules closer together, making it denser and heavier. But when water is cooled below 4°C, it starts expanding and becomes lighter. Ice, at temperatures below 0°C, floats in the same water. This anomaly allows life to be sustained under frozen lakes and rivers during winter.
Similarly, coconut oil provides the benefits of fats required by the human body—without the usual side effect of weight gain.
Oil or Fat?
Lipids are generally classified into oils and fats. Though coconut oil is technically an oil, it behaves in many ways like a fat.

Generalizations Don’t Hold
Since coconut oil is an anomaly, some typical generalizations don’t apply:
- Saturated fats are bad. Coconut oil is saturated. Therefore, coconut oil is bad. ❌
- Cholesterol clogs arteries and is bad for the heart. Coconut oil has cholesterol. Therefore, coconut oil is bad. ❌
- Oil intake should be avoided for better health. Therefore, coconut oil should not be used. ❌
In fact, the reverse is often true for coconut oil.
Digestion
Digestion is about breaking down complex molecules like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into simpler forms to release energy. Simpler hydrocarbons are easier to digest.
Medium Chain Fatty Acids
The majority of coconut oil consists of easily digestible medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). In contrast, most other edible oils contain long-chain fatty acids that require special enzymes for digestion, putting strain on the pancreas, liver, and digestive system—and tend to get stored as body fat.
Coconut oil contains about 50% lauric acid (C12). For comparison:
- Olive oil (considered healthy) is mostly oleic acid (C18).
- Sunflower oil is mostly linoleic acid (C18).
You can practically experience the difference—after eating fried food, your stomach feels lighter with coconut oil and bloated or heavy with sunflower oil.
Reasons Coconut Oil Aids Weight Loss
- Improved metabolism: Less food is needed to generate the same energy.
- Instant energy: Reduces cravings by quickly providing fuel to the body.
- Not stored as fat: Fully digested into usable energy rather than being stored.
Ironically, people in non-tropical regions—where coconuts don’t grow—go out of their way to import coconut oil for its health benefits. Yet in tropical regions where coconuts are abundant, people often undervalue them. As a Kannada saying goes, “ಹಿತ್ತಲ ಗಿಡ ಮದ್ದಲ್ಲ” (“The plant growing in the backyard is not considered medicine”).
